Mandy Russ ‘12, an ITAP Student Director and mathematics major, is serving as DePauw’s Google Student Ambassador this year.

After submitting her proposal last summer, Mandy was one of just 140 students selected from 109 campuses who were flown to Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, for a 2-day summit in August.

The Google Student Ambassador Program is an opportunity for students to act as liaisons between Google and their universities. These ambassadors learn about innovative Google products and programs, plan and host fun events for students on their campus, and help Google better understand each university’s culture.

DePauw Google Apps is expanding to offer more applications

Watch a video about the new applications

On March 3, 2011, DePauw’s Google Apps for Education domain will be expanded to enable you to access several more Google services with your depauw.edu account.

Once this update has been applied, the next time you log in to your DePauw Google Apps account you will see a one-time confirmation screen that describes the new services. After that, you can begin using them with your depauw.edu account.

Additional services will include Blogger, Reader, and Picasa, among others and can be found under the “More” link at the top of the Google window.

Once your DePauw Google Apps account has been expanded, here are two key points you should be aware of:

  • If you are already logged in to your DePauw Google Apps account, Google will automatically sign you into each of these additional services the first time you visit it. Remember that data you save or post there using your DePauw account is subject to the University’s Electronic Communication and Acceptable Use Policy.
  • If you already have a personal account in one of these expanded Google Applications that you created with your depauw.edu address, the next time you log in after the update Google will walk you through steps to create a new personal username for that account. Afterwards, the data there is safe and you can continue to access that personal Google account using the new username. You can find more information on resolving this issue at on DePauw’s Google Apps help site at Resolving Mulitple Accounts.

If you have any questions regarding the upgrade, contact the HelpDesk (765-658-4294, helpdesk@depauw.edu).

Last day for GroupWise & Tigermail is Oct 1!

September 28th, 2010 by Carol L. Smith

Remember:

After Friday October 1, you will no longer be able to access to the old email system – GroupWise or TigerMail.

If you wish to keep any of your emails that are currently in GroupWise, you must copy them to your Google Apps account before that date!

For detailed instructions, visit the Google Apps support site at https://sites.google.com/a/depauw.edu/depauw-google-apps/.

How to get help copying your old email:

For the past few weeks, Information Services staff has been offering open lab times for those who would like assistance with completing the migration to Google Apps.

The final open lab session is on Thursday September 30, 1:00-4:00pm in the Roy O West Computer Lab, or you can contact the Help Desk at 765-658-4294 to arrange for personal assistance.

Going Google at DePauw – We made it!

May 7th, 2010 by Carol L. Smith

GoGooglesidewalk-compressedFrom Carol L. Smith, CIO

We are right on schedule with DePauw’s transition to Google Apps!

We initiated the switch from GroupWise/Tigermail to Google Apps last Saturday as planned and since then mail to DePauw is delivered directly to our Google Apps accounts. Things went well over the weekend, have continued smoothly through this week, and there are now close to 3300 people using DePauw’s Google Apps. Whew!

As we step into this next phase of the project (mainly copying what’s left in our GroupWise/Tigermail accounts and learning what’s new with the new system), I want to leave you with few quick tips and reminders about how email works now with Google Apps.

As I mentioned at the start of this project, we are excited about this upgrade for the campus. I really look forward to the new possibilities that it brings for supporting communication and collaboration in all aspects of our campus activities.

Thank you for your patience and perseverance in helping make this a successful transition!

Cheers,

–Carol.             “DePauw has Gone Google!”

Key points in the following include:

  1. You can send now email to DePauw distribution lists from Google Apps
  2. You CAN still read your old GroupWise/Tigermail email, but…
  3. Remember! Don’t use GroupWise/Tigermail to send mail, especially to other DePauw accounts
  4. Check your Google Apps messages labeled as “Spam” occasionally
  5. The Google Apps automatic out-of-office responder works now
  6. Recommended browsers for using Google Apps
  7. Where to find more help

From The DePauw: “Bye bye Novell, hello future”

March 4th, 2010 by Carol L. Smith

From a February 26 editorial published in The DePauw:

“A campus email system should not hinder communication, and hopefully this new Gmail system will prove to do just the opposite. The web apps, while relatively standard to well-versed Internet users like students, offer cool new ways for students and faculty alike to communicate and coordinate.

It’s exciting to see DePauw moving forward in technology, especially when this move means leaving behind old, clunky systems for shiny new ones.”

From a February 16 article published in The DePauw:

Students and faculty alike who have been growing frustrated with Novell Tigermail should soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief.  The university’s current e-mail client will be replaced with Google Apps for Education. The shift will not require anyone to change their e-mail addresses.
